Do Exchange Crypto Cards Settle Instantly?
Based on verified official data as of 20.07.2026; hands-on update coming.
From your side, effectively yes: the crypto-to-fiat conversion happens in real time at the moment the card is authorized, and your balance is deducted on the spot. The merchant never touches crypto — they are paid fiat through normal card rails. Under the hood, networks separate authorization (a promise from the issuer, delivered in seconds at the till) from clearing and settlement (the actual movement of money between banks, typically 1-3 business days).
TL;DR
- Crypto is sold at authorization, in seconds — your balance drops immediately.
- The merchant receives fiat via the card network, never crypto.
- Bank-to-bank settlement takes 1-3 business days, exactly like any Mastercard or Visa payment.
What happens at the till
When you tap an exchange card, the issuer checks your spendable balance and converts crypto to fiat in real time. Bybit's help center describes the mechanics: fiat in the Funding Account is deducted first, and any shortfall is covered by auto-selling crypto at the One-Click Sell rate plus a conversion fee, all within the authorization window.
The rate you get is the rate at authorization. Price moves after you tap do not change what you paid — the crypto side is locked the moment the terminal approves.
Authorization versus settlement
Authorization is the issuer's real-time approval: fraud checks, balance check, and a hold on funds, completed in seconds. Clearing happens later, when the merchant batches the day's approved transactions and the network reconciles them between the acquiring and issuing banks. Settlement — money actually landing in the merchant's account — typically takes one to three business days.
This split explains two things cardholders notice: transactions sit as 'pending' before posting, and refunds take days, because a reversal has to travel back through the same clearing cycle.
Who this is NOT for
- Merchants researching crypto payment acceptance — this covers the cardholder side
- On-chain payments or stablecoin transfers, which settle on different rails entirely
Frequently asked questions
Pending means authorized but not yet cleared. Your crypto was already converted and held at authorization, but the merchant's batch has not finished the clearing and settlement cycle between banks, which typically takes one to three business days. The posted amount almost always matches the authorized one.
